What is the Knowledge Quarter Liverpool?

The aim of the Knowledge Quarter Liverpool (KQ Liverpool) regeneration programme is to close the economic gap with London and the South East by creating and promoting the innovative industries that operate within the Knowledge Quarter.The City of Liverpool’s Knowledge Quarter is home to some of the world’s most influential leaders in science, health, technology, culture and education and boasts of over £1 billion of new developments underway.

Knowledge Quarter Liverpool will support the growth of new innovative businesses by promoting programmes that invest in research, positioning Liverpool as a world leads of global innovation. The Knowledge Quarter encompasses a three step vision that will fuel inward investment, improving the area and its surrounds:

  • Making the place
  • Improving the connectivity
  • Attracting investment

 

There are three areas that form the Knowledge Quarter, being Paddington Village,Upper Central and Fabric District. Paddington Village is a key site, expected to attract a further £1 billion to the city, housing a 1.8 million square feet science, technology, education and health space. There will be a cluster of facilities in the centre of Paddington Village, including Liverpool International College, RCP North and Rutherford Cancer Centre.

 

Paddington Village

The Paddington Village is a £1 billion expansion site over 30 acres, situated at the Eastern Gateway to the city centre and is an urban village inspired by Greenwich Village in New York City.

Paddington Village will have 1.8 million square feet of science, technology, education and health space, being developed in three phases, Paddington Central which is already underway, Paddington South and Paddington North.

The village will feature state-of-the-art workspace, laboratories, cafés, restaurants,shops, accommodation, hotel, teaching and events space.

 

Upper Central

Upper Central is situated between Mount Pleasant, Copperas Hill and Lime Street Station.

Upper Central is on a scale that is equivalent to London’s Kings Cross and will be transformed into a vibrant part of the city of Liverpool, featuring shops,offices, galleries, bars, restaurants, gyms and university space. The new commercial space for tech and digital businesses, alongside modern education space.

The City of Liverpool are creating a Spatial Regeneration Framework (SRF) for the Gateway, to improve the experience for visitors and commuters into the city.

The Upper Central regeneration programme is already underway with the Ion scheme on Lime Street and the demolition of the former of the former sorting office on Copperas Hill by Liverpool John Moore’s University, which will attract investment in tech and education, creating a green, accessible environment between the Knowledge Quarter and the rest of the City Centre.

 

Fabric District

Fabric District is the rebranding of Islington, the industrial area between London Road and New Islington, that will benefit from significant transformation,creating vibrant area of the city.

Fabric District will encompass daytime and night time economies catering for the Knowledge Quarter, expanding the City Centre offering, connecting the Knowledge Quarter with the residential areas of North Liverpool.
